PRACTICAL LEADERSHIP TIP - BE PRESENT
When a 1 on 1 with a direct report comes around, remember: the most important task in your calendar is to be present, right now!
You have both put aside the time to be here and meet. It isn’t urgent, but it is critically important. Use the time you have put aside for the intended purpose. Shut the laptop, turn your phone off, and move these devices aside.
Send the clear message that you are there, in the moment, fully focused on the individual direct report in front of you.
The discipline you bring to your 1 on 1s will, I believe, play a huge part in determining the results you get as a manager. If you show that you value the time you have both put aside, this will build loyalty in your direct report. It will also lead you to focus and use the time well.
And if you can’t be present because of the thoughts you have racing around in your head about that pressing issue, then out of courtesy, rearrange the 1 on 1 to another time when you can be present.
Here’s a tool I’ve adapted from many I’ve found that will help you structure a 1 on 1. Try it, adapt it, play with it and let me know how the conversation goes.
