KICK IMPOSTER SYNDROME FOR TOUCH!

We all feel outside our comfort zone and ability level at times.  Particularly when we are attempting to push the boundaries of what we know and how we’ve operated in the past. I’ve just had four days in Sydney with some amazing people who are all experts in what they do. These rockstar speakers, facilitators and authors - mainly from Australasia - are part of Thought Leaders Business School. They all have different areas of expertise.

As I sat in the room, having worked really hard at my practice over the last 9 months, I started to feel a little niggle of doubt. “What am I doing here?”  I had that persistent voice on my shoulder saying “you haven’t done all the work! You don't deserve this!” I really had to focus on not listening to that voice.

As leaders in our organisations, I think it’s time to kick this imposter out the door!

Three practical tips to help:

 1. Share your lows as well as your highs

Have a mate you can call up and say ‘hey things aren’t going too flash right now’. I had two friends check in with me this morning, which really helping me to back myself, and what I’m aiming to achieve.

2. Get a great mentor or two!

Having someone you can learn off is huge when you are pushing outside your normal world. One mentor of mine is a fireball of energy and positivity. I can always count on her giving me a nudge in the right direction. Thank you Lisa O’Neill.

3. Cut yourself some slack by creating space

First job on my list this week was to build in some time for short breaks with my wife, and rest and recovery over the next 3 months.  Every six weeks I’ll take a long weekend or half a day away from my normal world to completely stop and recharge. I know this will help me do a much better job of being rested and ready to help the people I am blessed to work with.

Next time you feel that niggly voice of self-doubt, remember you’ve got this; there are many supporters around you cheering on your every move.
