PRACTICAL LEADERSHIP IN ACTION: CAN I GET THROUGH THIS?
One week in to the fishing trip and four weeks to go. There was a moment of feeling like was I going to make it? Who did I think I was that I thought I could do this?
I remember a seasoned fisher telling me “You’re too soft to go fishing!” This just spurred me on. It’s like the school teacher from years ago who tells you that you won’t go far. You become committed to show that person you can make something yourself. I was determined not to ‘break’. My way of coping was to structure my shifts as much as I could so I had routines I could hold myself to i.e. doing my laundry regularly, tidying my gear, making time to talk with my fellow crew mates in the mess.
What are the structures and tools you use to help control you environment?
